Such A Tease: Folter Clothing
Ever since she could remember, Agnes Yeygan, the Head Designer at Folter Clothing, has been striking down the walls of conventional fashion on a slow mission to rid the world of your grandmother's underwear.
"Fashion has always been a big part of my life," cites Agnes. Folter Clothing's style is playful, but has an obviously adult allure that's made it a recent favorite with celebs and the media alike. Folter Clothing has been featured in Teeze, Tattoo Savage and Prick, and has graced the bodies of scene queens Joan Jett, Kat Von D and Masuimi Max. Her clothes are a constant reflection of an ever present lolita effect in women — that naughty, but nice factor that drives good men to ruin.
Originating out of Los Angeles in 2005, Folter Clothing was a great undertaking. "Launching Folter has been the most challenging thing I've ever done and I think my greatest achievement so far," says Agnes. "I could not have done it without my husband who is the greatest business partner and really the backbone of the company." Since its inception, she hasn't allowed herself to become stifled with any set backs. "Regrets are a waste of time. I've learned so much from everything that I've done. I've learned a lot from my mistakes and from other's mistakes and that's all that matters."
She has garnered visual inspiration from numerous fashion luminaries, including the late Alexander McQueen. "Alexander McQueen is definitely on top of my list. He was a visionary and a fashion icon. Some of my other favorites are Christian Lacroix and Hussein Chalayan." It's possible these influences have helped bring forth one-of-kind pieces like the corset beater which was recently worn by an adult star to the AVN ceremonies. When Gothic Beauty asked Folter about the creativity and variety that's displayed each season, Agnes replied "It's a mix of influences from punk rock, street, Gothic, fetish, retro, pin-up, etc. I never stick to one thing and I find mixing different styles and making them your own to be the most fun. I also think that every woman wants to feel sexy, so I keep that in mind when designing. Ultimately every collection is really different. It just depends on what catches my attention that season. We love to get feedback as to how we are doing and what our customers like and dislike about what we do. We work very hard to make sure that we keep our fans happy."
Designing is a great endeavor, with each designer employing their own personal methods that sculpt the line into what each buyer will see online and on the racks. When asked what she thought was the most integral piece of the design process, she replied "I think editing is very important. There are always pieces in the collection which get cut from editing and merchandising. There are many times where I've loved the design when it was just a sketch, and by the time we got done with sampling, fitting, styling and shooting, I got bored with it. These are the ones that we remove from the collection. When we are done editing the line I make sure that only the ones we love go out into the market." Agnes continues, "Currently we offer four catalogs a year with about 80-100 styles a season. We would like to offer a full line of accessories that complement our clothes."
