The Story of Gothic Beauty

Gothic Beauty was created by Steven Holiday in early 2000 as an internet social group and picture site. With the success of the social group, Steven expanded Gothic Beauty as a print magazine in the Fall of 2000.

Initially not well received within the local goth scene (most Issue 1’s were hard to even give away), Steven started working with Martin Lansky of The Mission Boutique and his team of creative folks to further develop the magazine’s concept. With Marty’s help, Gothic Beauty was picked up by Hot Topic starting with Issue 2. Steven then submitted the magazine to Tower Records and after a nice conversation with Clint Johns (Tower’s magazine buyer), Issue 2 was picked up by Tower Records as well. It was after Issue 2 and during the production of Issue 3 that Steven was able to work on Gothic Beauty as his full-time career.

In the Summer of 2002, Steven moved from Milwaukee WI to Portland OR. Upon arriving in Portland, Steven was well received and started working on Issue 7. It was during this time that he met and married Ruby. With Ruby’s help, Gothic Beauty further evolved into a unique print magazine with a truly global audience.

Steven still lives in Portland with his wife Ruby. Now on Issue 26, Gothic Beauty has the privilege of working with some of the most talented writers, editors, photographers, and creative types the American goth movement has to offer.
