A Nightmare On Elm Street 2010 (movie review)

In the last 7 years, horror fans have been bombarded with the retelling of their favorite films. Much has been written on the travesty of this. I understand that it's a very popular (and for the most part, very true) opinion that remakes can't hold up to the original.

It's also true that fans are going into the theaters a little jaded when their favorite film is the subject of the latest envisioning. In fact — let's be honest — if you grew up watching and adoring a certain movie, chances are there is little the remake can do that will make you fall in love with it. That being said, having this mentality can also make you miss out on something that might be improved upon. The newest version of A Nightmare On Elm Street is the perfect example.

Franchise horror has been the backbone of the ooky, spooky genre for the better part of 30 years. While fans all have their favorite, A Nightmare On Elm Street has always been special. This is largely due to the fact that the bad guy has been faithfully played by Robert Englund in all 8 films preceding the current remake. When it was announced that Englund would not be putting on the glove for the new film, many wondered if another actor could really pull off Freddy Krueger. Jackie Earle Haley (who played the infamous character of Rorschach in Watchmen) proved to be a brilliant casting choice and indeed "pulled it off". Englund's version of Krueger has always been played tongue and cheek — this has perhaps been the part of the charm. Haley, though not without his one-liners, added more intensity to his interpretation of the monster. Haley also added in new mannerisms while still embracing the character's groundwork that Englund laid 26 years ago — a wonderful balance that takes a truly gifted actor to engage.

The remake's story was also substantially darker than the first movie. In this 2010 version, the teenagers experiencing the nightmares all share the common bond of being molested by their pre-school's gardener Fred Krueger. When the parents discovered what was happening to their children, they chased Krueger down and burned him alive. The children grew up to all have repressed memories of the sexual abuse and are now being picked off one by one in their sleep. In the original version, Krueger kills upwards of 20 children, stands trial, is released on a technicality, is hunted down by vigilantes and then burned in the boiler room where he hurt the children. He then seeks revenge on the vigilante's children in their sleep.

I feel that the new, slightly altered version of the story holds a bit more weight. It also brings in an even darker connection that Krueger has with "his children". There are a few scenes that really go into the psychology of memory repression and are incredibly difficult to watch — not what you're necessarily expecting from a franchise horror film! With all this being said, the movie is not without its glaring flaws either. The first being it's simply not that scary. The original film still has a way of completely unnerving you no matter how many times you watch it. The new version plays out more like a morbid episode of Law and Order than it does of a horror film. It's glossy, filled with several CGI gore effects, and gets its biggest jumps from the scenes directly taken from the first film. I wish they could have captured the grittier, more traditional horror movie feel of the original and combined it with the superior script of the remake.

I don't, however, regret watching this movie. There's enough here to appeal to the old fans as well as create new ones for the series. It's worth checking out while it's still in theaters and may even find a home on your movie shelf someday, if you're open-minded enough.

a-nightmare-on-elm-street-2010-a.jpg"Nancy, Kris, Quentin, Jesse and Dean all live on Elm Street. At night, they're all having the same dream — of the same man, wearing a tattered red and green striped sweater, a beaten fedora half-concealing a disfigured face and a gardener’s glove with knives for fingers. And they’re all hearing the same frightening voice…"

Good review, I feel just about the same. Loving Freddy for years and always wanting to pull the Little Ceasers pizza marathon I was excited for this. The story was great but yes not very scary and at times just not as good. That being said. I still loved it for its own reasons. But I will own this.

I have always loved Nightmare on Elm St. I actually walked out half way through this movie. It was terrible - I wish they would have done something a bit different. All of the scenes are similar to the older ones (ex- girl getting thrown around bedroom). It was not exciting and I knew exactly what would happen, it was a very predicable movie that was not worth the money.

it was good, i am the queen of freddy marathons, own every single one, and although i love me some robert englund it would not have made much sense to have him play the remake in a "different manner" i liked it, everyone spend the ten dollars and enjoy.

"I'm with danny. This remake was awful. That dude could not touch Dave Englund!"

You mean Robert Englund.

And, yeah, this sucked big time. Terrible acting! Plot holes galore.

<SPOILER BELOW>

Someone explain to me how the hell Jesse had the cops chasing him so soon after Kris' death? Who called the cops? There was no one else in the house.
Let's assume someone heard Kris scream. So, they called the cops and said they heard screaming coming from a house. ONE cop car would show up eventually. But, there were 6 cops and at least 3 cars, lights blazing within minutes of Kris' death?
Dumb dumb dumb.

I was dragged to this half baked attempt at a horror movie by my girlfriend a couple days ago and amist the senseless copycating, proving hollywoods run dry of true originality given the slew of endless needless and utterly poitless remakes they spew out, I found myself asking myself a couple of questions; 1. why do the casts of these moderen remakes all closely resemble Gap models? (also seemingly possesing the same level of intelligence to said models)and 2. why? Just 'why' in general. why did this movie have to be made? why do people allow these films to florish and make money by goig ans seeing them? why dont we, as responsible keepers of all the volumes of the previous films say to our hapless frieds "No, just stay here and watch the original with us instead." I call to you, to all other goths who hold dear a standard all too often violated by modern society and passed down to our younger compatriots of the same or similar subculture of what is acceptable horror. we are the vagaurd that must teach the next generation of what true horror is. genereation

This was an amazing movie, although the ending was a bit too similar to the Friday the 13th remake.

i skipped this entirely after reading reviews & the storyline. Im just not into molester movies (i have kids). I love Robert as freddy & i dont think anyone could match him as a villian. I watched other remakes (Halloween, TCM, Friday the 13th) and the only one that wasn't total rubbish was Friday the 13th. It had its crappy points but wasn't as bad as say Halloween! All in all, i won't even let my kids watch this bull but they have watched the original series of movies many times over.

Hi there,

Even though I didn't get a kick out A Nightmare on Elm Street, I enjoyed your review.

One area I do agree on is that the remake is substantially darker than the first movie.

That said, I found it to be a really poorly executed remake which carries nothing but the title of Wes Craven's 1984 classic.

Just wrote a review over at my blog so hop on over to check it out.
